What are dentures and partial dentures?

Dentures and partial dentures are removable appliances custom-made to replace missing teeth. A full denture replaces an entire arch of teeth — upper or lower — while a partial denture fills in the gaps when some healthy teeth are still present.

Both options are shaped to match your mouth's natural contours, restoring your ability to chew, speak, and smile without discomfort or self-consciousness. With good habits and regular dental visits, they can serve you reliably for years.

Who is a good candidate?

Most adults with significant tooth loss are candidates for dentures or partials. During your consultation, Dr. Carren Langford will review your dental history, examine your mouth, and help you understand which option best suits your needs.

  • Lost most or all of your teeth on one or both arches
  • Have several missing teeth but still retain some healthy ones
  • Looking for a cost-effective, non-surgical restoration option
  • Have good overall oral health or are ready to address existing issues beforehand

Full dentures vs. partial dentures

Full dentures are designed for patients who have lost all of their teeth on the upper or lower arch (or both). They rest on the gum line and are held in place through suction and fit. Some patients also use a dental adhesive for extra stability.

Partial dentures are for patients who still have some of their natural teeth. They attach to existing teeth with small clasps and fill the spaces left by missing teeth — also helping prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of position over time.

What the process looks like

  • Initial consultation and assessment to evaluate your oral health and goals
  • Impressions and bite measurements for a precise, comfortable fit
  • Fitting appointments where the denture or partial is tried in and refined
  • Final delivery with care instructions and follow-up support

The real benefits

  • Chewing becomes easier, opening up more food options
  • Speech improves when gaps are filled in properly
  • Facial structure is better supported, reducing the sunken look that can come with tooth loss
  • Confidence returns in conversations, photos, and social situations
  • Remaining natural teeth stay in place when a partial is in use

Caring for your dentures

  • Remove them at night to give your gums time to rest
  • Rinse them after meals when possible
  • Brush them gently with a soft brush and a non-abrasive cleaner
  • Store them in water or a soaking solution overnight
  • Bring them to your regular checkups so we can check the fit
