What is root canal treatment?

A root canal treats infection or inflammation inside a tooth. Each tooth contains a soft inner layer called the pulp, which holds nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria reach this layer through a crack, deep cavity, or injury, the result is often significant pain and swelling.

Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent future infection. The tooth stays in place, and once a crown is placed over it, it functions just like it did before. It is not an extraction — it is a rescue.

Signs you might need a root canal

  • Persistent or throbbing pain in one tooth
  • Sharp sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near a specific tooth
  • Darkening or discoloration of a tooth
  • A recurring pimple-like bump on the gum

Is a root canal actually painful?

The honest answer is that the procedure itself is far less uncomfortable than the infection causing your pain. Local anesthesia is used throughout, so you should feel pressure at most during treatment. The nerve being treated is the source of your pain, and once it is removed, relief usually follows quickly.

Mild soreness in the area for a day or two after the procedure is normal and can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients return to their regular routine the same day.

The root canal process at SkyeView Dental

  • X-rays to assess the extent of infection and map the root canals
  • Local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout
  • Removal of the infected or inflamed pulp tissue
  • Thorough cleaning and shaping of the root canals
  • Sealing the tooth with a biocompatible filling material
  • Placement of a crown in a follow-up visit to restore full strength

Why saving the tooth matters

Losing a natural tooth sets off a chain of changes in your mouth. Neighboring teeth can drift, your bite can shift, and bone loss in the jaw often follows over time. Root canal treatment preserves what you already have — your natural tooth root continues to stimulate the jawbone, your bite stays balanced, and you avoid the cost and recovery of tooth replacement options down the line.

Recovering after treatment

  • Mild tenderness when biting down for a day or two
  • Some sensitivity in the surrounding gum tissue
  • Minor swelling that fades on its own
  • Avoid chewing on that side until your crown is placed

Paying for root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is at least partially covered by most dental insurance plans. We will review your benefits with you before treatment begins so there are no surprises. For any remaining balance, we accept CareCredit, HFD, cash, checks, and debit or credit cards.
